330 junior sailors meet for Nordic Championships in Helsinki
The Nordic Championships in sailing for the junior classes will be held
on 21-24 July in Helsinki, Finland. A large fleet of 330 young sailors
from the Nordic and Baltic countries will meet on the starting line on
Wednesday, July 21, at 11 hrs.
The Optimist Class is by far the largest with 167 sailors in the group
under 15, and 20 in the cadet group below 12 years. The Zoom8 class
fields 92 entries, while the Europe dinghies are 23, the Laser Radials
16 and the Laser 4.7 fields are 11 boats.
The host country, Finland has the largest contingent with 104 sailors,
followed by Denmark with 79, Norway by 72 and Sweden by 60 junior
sailors. Estonia will send a squad of 14 sailors. No less than 114 of
the juniors, over a third, are girls.
The regatta is organized by the BS, HTPS, HSK, HSS, M, NJK and SPS yacht
clubs of the Helsinki region, in close cooperation with the Europe,
Laser, Optimist and Zoom-8 class associations of Finland. The race
courses are off Merisatama to the south of Helsinki, on the waters used
by the Finn dinghies at the 1952 Olympics.
